Electricity for Life: Generators for Medical Institutions in Dark Times

In the darkest days of 2022, when the full-scale war left entire regions without electricity, we, together with the Ukrainian Educational Platform and with the support of donors from England, implemented a project to deliver powerful yet compact generators to medical institutions where power supply had been completely cut off.

The project aimed to provide the basic conditions necessary for delivering medical care even during blackouts and under constant threats to the energy infrastructure.

Partners and Sources of Support

The initiative was implemented with the involvement of:

  • Philanthropists from the United Kingdom
  • NGO Ukrainian Educational Platform
  • Local communities and volunteer centers

This project became an example of true solidarity between countries, uniting resources and efforts to support Ukrainian healthcare.

Geography of Aid

  • Irpin, Kyiv region
  • Makariv, Kyiv region
  • Kyiv Volunteer Organization
  • Medical institutions of Zhytomyr region

Thanks to the mobility of some generators, they were also temporarily transferred to other locations — wherever critical infrastructure required urgent support.

The top priority was healthcare facilities, especially those treating the wounded, performing emergency surgeries, or providing urgent medical care.

Providing light means providing life. And thanks to your support — this became possible.

Energy That Saves Lives

This project is an example of a rapid response to a humanitarian crisis. In conditions where electricity disappeared for several days in certain regions, providing medical institutions with autonomous power sources became critically important.

The project was implemented in partnership with local authorities, medical institutions, and volunteers, which made it possible to identify needs as accurately as possible and to deliver the equipment promptly.

How It Worked

The transfer of generators was carried out in several stages:

  • Collection of requests from hospitals and communities
  • Logistics supported by local volunteers
  • Staff training on operation and maintenance

Donors and Logistics Partners

  • Private donors from the United Kingdom
  • Ukrainian Educational Platform
  • Volunteer communities of Kyiv region

Equipment Delivered

  • High-capacity generators
  • Portable generators

Key Benefits

  • Ensured uninterrupted operation of medical equipment
  • Saved lives during surgeries
  • Reduced stress for medical staff and patients

“Light in a hospital is not just about comfort. It is a chance for life.”
— Representative of a medical institution in Irpin

The delivery of generators to medical institutions was carried out within extremely tight deadlines, in response to numerous requests from communities affected by the energy crisis caused by the war.

The project was coordinated with local self-government bodies, volunteer organizations, and medical administrations, which made it possible to quickly identify needs and organize logistics.

Special attention was given to technical preparation — the generators were tested, adapted to the specific needs of the facilities, and delivered with instructions on safe use.

  • Generators of both high and low capacity were obtained in partnership with donors from the United Kingdom
  • Logistics planning and transportation were carried out under martial law conditions
  • Equipment was delivered to medical institutions in Irpin, Makariv, Zhytomyr region, and to a volunteer organization in Kyiv
  • Initial staff training on generator use was conducted
  • The transfer process was documented for reporting to donors and the public

The project was successfully completed, ensuring energy autonomy for dozens of critical medical care points in regions most affected by power outages.

The delivery of generators to medical institutions in the Kyiv and Zhytomyr regions was an important response to the challenges of the winter of 2022, when massive shelling by the Russian army left critical infrastructure without electricity for extended periods. Under these conditions, the project helped maintain the functioning of healthcare facilities by ensuring their basic electricity needs.

Thanks to this solution, medical staff were able to continue providing uninterrupted care — performing urgent surgeries, operating life-support equipment, and storing medicines, vaccines, and laboratory materials at the proper temperatures. This was not just a technical contribution — it was assistance that directly saved lives.
Beyond the immediate effect, the project also had a systemic impact. It became an example of effective cross-sectoral cooperation among philanthropists, volunteers, local authorities, and international partners. Through an open model of interaction, it was possible to respond quickly to requests from the field, optimize delivery, and ensure transparency of the process.

This experience also laid the foundation for developing new logistical protocols in the event of future crises. The involvement of local communities and volunteer networks made the process flexible and closely aligned with on-the-ground needs. The project also demonstrated that even under extremely difficult conditions, effective international humanitarian aid focused on results is possible.
Thanks to the generators provided through this initiative, not only were the health and lives of many people preserved, but trust in the aid system during times of crisis was also strengthened — both among medical professionals and the general population.

Achieved Results

  • Provided autonomous power supply to more than 8 medical institutions across 4 regional locations
  • Created stable working conditions for medical staff during the energy crisis
  • Enhanced energy security of critical infrastructure facilities during mass blackouts
  • Established an effective model for emergency delivery of humanitarian equipment to hospitals
  • Strengthened cooperation with international donors from the United Kingdom, opening prospects for new partnerships
